HQ-012 Ly Thai To is the second Gepard class frigate (Gepard 3.9 type) in the Vietnam People's Navy. She has built by shipyard named Gorki Russian Zelenodolsk under signed contracts with Vietnam Navy.[1][2]
HQ-012 Ly Thai To is designed to perform search tasks, track and destroy the floating target ships, air defense, anti-submarine (limited), escort, patrol territorial waters and special areas economic rights. HQ-012 Ly Thai To can combat independently or as modified. HQ-012 Ly Thai To use stealth technology, capable of a minimum presence on enemy radar screens.
Vietnam and Russia signed a contract worth 350 million USD to build two Gepard frigates designed by the Institute ZPKB 09.03 in Zelenodolsk designed for Navy Vietnam on May 12.2006.[3]
According to the manufacturer, HQ-012 Ly Thai To 's interior has been modified to increase crew comfort, improved compare to HQ-011 Dinh Tien Hoang - the previous Gepard 3.9 in Vietnam People's Navy. She has more convenient in maintenance and operation, improved longer for seaworthiness, higher maneuverability and faster in processing and a range of situations.[4][5]
HQ-012 Ly Thai To launched on 16.3.2011 (HQ is Hải Quân - Navy), named after Ly Thai To was Đại Việt Emperor and was the founder of the Lý Dynasty, he reigned from 1009 AD to 1028 AD.
Vietnam People's Navy has already owned two Gepard 3.9 frigates in 2011. Interfax said Vietnam has signed contracts with Rosoboronexport, Russia to provide two more Gepard 5.3 frigates. According Sergei Rudenko Gorky, Deputy Director of Zelenodolsk shipyard, that if the first two Gepard frigates of Vietnam Navy are equipped with modernest missiles of Russia military, the next two ships will be equipped with modernest anti-submarine devices.[6]
